Overberg Wine Route

The Overberg wine route is famous for its Wines. The region boasts some of the Best Chardonnays and Pinot Noir in the world. This is all due to the Terroir influence and the cool Atlantic breeze that blows into this beautiful valley, Hemel en Aarde (Heaven and Earth) as this valley is known and stretches for 20km with 15 wine estates and growing. Hemel en Aarde is located in Hermanus, so there is a lot more things to do than just wine tasting.

Hemel en Aarde ( Heaven on Earth)

Not only is Hermanus famous for its wine and beauty but has a long history. It was also known as a land of sorrow from 1817-1846. This was a period when a Leper colony was established due to the many cases of leprosy that inflicted many areas in the Western Cape. The isolation that the Hemel en Aarde Valley offers was a reason for the area to be made into a Leper Colony. The 1st report of leprosy was in Stellenbosch in 1756 and a Leper colony should be established. The 1st colony was set up in Swellendam, which is about 140km from the Hemel en Aarde Valley. Six years later Lord Charles Somerset saw the urgency of this matter and set out in finding a secluded safe area for the Lepers. This is when Hemel en Aarde was found. The farm was know as Attaquas and owned by Susan Niemand which was herself a Leper. They farmed Fruits and Vegetables and soon a hospital was build by George Nicol, a stonemason from Caledon. By the end of the year there were 120 patients. All the remnents of the Leper Colony is no longer. Only its memories.
